Kim Lieberman’s second solo exhibition at GALLERY AOP is titled Human Constellations. She continues to examine familiar concepts explored in previous exhibitions (Human Currents, 2006, Every Action Interrupts the Future, 2003  and Blood Relatives, 2000), but introduces different mediums while engaging with the human connections theme on a more personal level.

In the drawings and paintings on exhibition she continues to utilize the silhouette as central motif to explore the complexity of human relationships, connecting them with a geometrical line pattern instead of the curvilinear, arabesque lines used previously. Significantly, instead of sourcing the figures from books, magazines and photographs, the figures used in the new work are intimately meaningful and references people who have had a direct influence on her life, in one way or another.

Lieberman also introduces a body of sculptural work for which she specially took up lace making. Delicate lace circles are positioned on the necks of antique bronze figures, found in a scrap metal yard a number of years ago. Instead of the pencil lines connecting the figures in the works on paper, the threads used in lacemaking form a structural web, radiating outward from each figure.

Kim Lieberman obtained a MA (Fine Art) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand with distinction in 2001. She has had regular solo exhibitions since 1996 and has published five exhibition catalogues to date. She has taken part in group exhibitions locally and internationally. Her work has been reviewed extensively and included in group exhibition catalogues. She has lectured part-time in the Fine Arts Departments of the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg (formerly Witwatersrand Technikon). Kim Lieberman lives and works in Johannesburg.
